No woodworker enjoys sanding.
It is a thankless, boring, time-consuming and endless task. But
this tape shows you the tricks and shortcuts that will take much
of the drudgery out of sanding.
The exotic wood for this tape is rosewood. The tape discusses
eleven different types of rosewood, both finished and unfinished,
from all over the world. The long history of rosewood, working
characteristics, costs and sources of supply are also included.
In the Jargon Corner Woodguy discusses "wood movement,"
the expansion and contraction of wood as a result of changes in
humidity. In the mail segment, he answers a question about why
nails are classified by "pennies".
In the feature segment, the Woodguy covers the history of sandpaper
and what they did before they had sandpaper. He discusses all
of the different kinds of sandpaper, how to make the best use
of the new sandpaper, tricks for sanding curves, the best way
to use a vibrator, disk and random orbital sanders. He demonstrates
how to glue up and level a solid wood tabletop with a belt sander.
He then shows you how to avoid sanding by using old methods of
a hooked burr on a scraper blade on both flat and curved surfaces.
He demonstrates how to level a tabletop with a belt sander, how
to use a drum sander, random orbital, disk sander, table saw sanding
attachments.
Tim Sutherland is our master craftsman interviewed in Tape # 2.
In this segment, we tour his shop, and he tells us how he purchased
some of his machines from a scrap metal yard and brought them
back to life. He is in the middle of making a solid walnut sideboard
and he describes the process of going from idea to reality. We
also spend some time with his drum sander, showing how it works.
Tim's portfolio is amazing. He is a master carver and his wife
is an artist. His church doors and animal carvings are the best
Woodguy has ever seen. Tim discusses how he keeps his carving
tools sharp as he uses them and also his electric and air-powered
carving tool.
In the "Saving Your Money" section, we tell you how
to identify any wood.
