3) Free wood identification. The Forest Service will identify wood for you. Just mail them a sample about the size of an index card, and a letter explaining how you came to have the sample and any other information about the sample that might help them in their search. Mail to: The Forest Products Laboratory, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, One Gifford Pinchot Drive, Madison, WI 53705-2398. Allow about six weeks. Don't forget to include in your letter a return address. If you want to identify a tree, a better and faster way is to call your local county extension agent.
